Abaris’ Technical Presence at CAMX 2014 Inaugural Event
October 22nd, 2014 by Lou DorworthThe first ever CAMX show and technical symposium was held last week in Orlando, FL, mixing the best of talent from the Advanced Composite Manufacturing Association (ACMA)and the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering (SAMPE). The conference started on Monday with eleven pre-conference tutorials, of which two of the three hour events were presented by our own Lou Dorworth, on the topics of Composite Repair Methodology and Tooling for Composite Manufacturing. Both events were well attended, highlighting the need for education in these areas.
Abaris’ senior engineer, Dr. Rikard Heslehurst, was the speaker at the SAMPE awards luncheon on Thursday afternoon, wowing the audience with a spectacular presentation titled “High Performance Sailplanes: Is It Just Aerodynamics That Makes Them Soar?” The talk featured an overview of the history of sailplanes and specifically the improvements in performance with the use of advanced composite materials in their construction. The 45 minute presentation was a mix of factual and humorous slides, as well as some very cool video footage showing the many forces in effect on the airframe when the sailplane is in flight. Dr Heslehurst’s luncheon presentation was well received and all had a good time whilst enjoying a meal and dessert!
